Back Pain From "Worn Discs"? Understanding What's Happening in Your Spine and How We Can Help

Does it feel like your lower back has become a fragile, painful or stiff area? Have you been told you have "disc disease" or "a herniated disc"? If so, you're not alone. Low back pain is one of the most common reasons for medical and physiotherapy consultations, and it often has to do with what's happening in the intervertebral discs, those small "cushions" between the bones of your spine.
Today we want to explain, in simple terms, what's going on in there... and, above all, how physiotherapy can help you recover your wellbeing.
🧩 What is lumbar disc disease?

Imagine your spine is a tower of Lego bricks and that between each block there's a small sponge that "cushions movement" and "allows movement": those are the intervertebral discs. They're made up of a gel-like centre (like a jelly sweet) and a tougher fibrous ring around it.
Over the years, or because of certain postures, repeated strain or lack of movement, these discs can dehydrate, wear down or even bulge outward, as if the jelly sweet started coming out of its wrapper. That's what's known as protrusion or a herniated disc.
When this happens, the disc can irritate nearby structures such as ligaments or nerve roots, causing local pain, stiffness, or even sciatica (that pain that shoots down the leg like an electric current).
🔎 Does this mean I have a serious injury?
Not at all! In fact, many studies have shown that most people have some degree of disc disease without even knowing it. The good news is that low back pain of disc origin can be treated and improved without surgery, and in most cases, the body is able to adapt, or even partially reabsorb the herniation over time.
What matters is understanding the pain, knowing what feeds it and what calms it, and progressively regaining mobility and strength.
🛠️ How do we help you at KINEO Benidorm?
At our centre we work with a comprehensive, phased approach, tailored to your situation and how your body responds. We walk with you step by step, combining advanced technology with the most important thing: guided movement.
✅ Phase 1 – Turning down the pain
If you're at a stage where everything hurts, where every movement seems to "set off an alarm", the goal is to calm the area down so you can move again without fear.
✅ Phase 2 – Regaining control
Once the pain goes down, the next step is to reactivate the deep muscles, the ones that stabilise your spine and that tend to switch off when there's pain.
We teach you to wake those protective muscles back up — like resetting your back's "software" — using personalised exercises and technology such as muscle electrostimulation.
✅ Phase 3 – Strengthening the structure
Here we start working seriously with loads, pulleys, weights and functional exercises. Like rebuilding a strong, flexible spine that's ready for real life.
We gradually increase the intensity and your confidence, always adapting to your pace.
✅ Phase 4 – Getting back to your life without fear
The last phase is returning to your activities: work, sport, carrying your children, dancing, or simply bending down without thinking "will I hurt myself?".
We practise the movements you need in your daily life and, if necessary, design a maintenance plan so that you don't fall back into the pain loop.
💡 What if you've already tried other treatments?
We know that many people come to us after having tried medication, injections, or even been told they need surgery. In those cases, we assess together with you whether there's still room for improvement through physiotherapy, and design a personalised strategy.
Sometimes, it's not about doing more things, but about doing the right thing at the right time.
✋ Pain isn't always a sign of damage… but it is a sign you need a change
At KINEO Benidorm we don't just treat a back — we treat the person behind the pain. We listen to you, explain what's happening in your body, and walk with you towards recovery.
